Imgur Blocked in the UK: What to Use Instead

Why Imgur is unavailable in the UK, what it means for old links in forums and Reddit, and UK-friendly image hosts that still work.

Imgur has been unavailable in the United Kingdom since 30 September 2025. Imgur's owner, MediaLab, withdrew the service after the UK data regulator (the ICO) told it that it intended to fine the company over how Imgur handled children's personal data. For UK users this means no logging in, no uploads and no viewing, including Imgur images embedded on forums, Reddit and other websites. What you can do about it depends on who you are: a UK reader, a UK account holder, or someone whose posts have UK readers.

Why is Imgur not available in the UK?

Imgur blocked UK access itself on 30 September 2025, after the ICO, the UK data regulator, issued its owner MediaLab with a notice of intent to fine it over how Imgur handled children's personal data. The ICO called the withdrawal "a commercial decision taken by the company", and fined MediaLab £247,590 in February 2026.

Here is the sequence of events, based on statements from the ICO and Imgur itself.

DateWhat happened
3 March 2025The ICO announced investigations into how TikTok, Reddit and Imgur use UK children's personal information and age assurance
10 September 2025The ICO issued MediaLab with a notice of intent to impose a monetary penalty
30 September 2025Imgur's help center announced that access from the UK was no longer available
30 September 2025The ICO said Imgur's decision to restrict access was "a commercial decision taken by the company"
5 February 2026The ICO fined MediaLab £247,590

Sources: the ICO's statement on the Imgur investigation, the ICO's announcement of the fine, and Imgur's UK access help article.

In its September 2025 statement, the ICO also made clear that "exiting the UK does not allow an organisation to avoid responsibility for any prior infringement of data protection law". When announcing the fine, the ICO listed three failings: no measures to check users' ages, processing the personal information of children under 13 without parental consent or another lawful basis, and no data protection impact assessment to identify risks to children.

Two points are easy to get wrong:

  • The UK government did not block Imgur. The ICO described the withdrawal as Imgur's own commercial decision. Imgur chose to geo-block UK visitors rather than continue operating there.
  • The fine is about data protection, not about images being illegal. The ICO's case concerned how children's personal information was handled and the lack of age checks.

When we checked on 6 October 2026, Imgur's UK help article still said access from the UK was unavailable. If that changes, Imgur's help center is the place it will be announced.

Can I still view Imgur images in the UK?

Imgur images cannot be viewed from the UK. According to Imgur's help article, UK users "will not be able to log in, view content, or upload images". Links such as i.imgur.com/... addresses do not load, accounts cannot be managed from the UK, and Imgur images embedded on forums, Reddit and other websites do not display for UK visitors.

In practice that means:

  • You cannot browse imgur.com or use it to upload from a UK connection.
  • Links that people send you, such as i.imgur.com/... addresses, do not load.
  • Accounts still exist, but you cannot sign in from the UK to manage them.

Embedded images on other sites

This is the part that affects people who never used Imgur directly. Imgur's help article says that "Imgur content embedded on third-party sites will not display for UK users". So if a forum thread, a game guide, a GitHub README or an old Reddit post shows an image hosted on Imgur, a UK visitor sees a blank space, a broken image icon or an error graphic in its place, depending on the site. Visitors in other countries still see the image, which makes the problem easy to miss if you are not in the UK yourself. Our guide to why images do not show covers how to tell this apart from other causes of missing images.

What you can do, depending on who you are

If you are a UK reader

There is little you can fix yourself, because the image sits on Imgur's servers. The practical options are:

  • Ask the poster to re-host it. On a forum or Reddit thread, a short reply saying the image does not load in the UK is often enough. Many posters do not know.
  • Check for a copy elsewhere. Popular guides are often mirrored on a wiki or the project's own site.
  • Ask a moderator if a pinned guide or FAQ relies on Imgur images. Fixing one pinned post helps every UK reader.

If you had an Imgur account

You cannot log in from the UK, but Imgur's help article says you can still exercise your data protection rights without logging in, using its help center request forms:

Imgur says it may ask for information to verify your identity and will respond within the time limits set by UK data protection law. It also says it may continue to process limited personal data where necessary and lawful, for example to meet legal obligations.

If you uploaded without an account

Anonymous uploads were never tied to an account, and Imgur says it cannot assign them to one afterwards, so a data request will not find them. Your options are your own original files, or asking someone outside the UK to save the images for you. Originals are usually better anyway, because Imgur compresses larger still images and converts big PNGs to JPEG on upload.

If your posts or site have UK readers

Every Imgur image you have embedded is broken for that audience today. Find them by searching your posts, pages or repository for imgur.com, starting with the pages that get the most UK traffic. Then re-upload the images to another host and swap the links. Our guide to Imgur alternatives walks through the whole move step by step, including Imgur's own download options and a spreadsheet method for tracking old and new links.

One UK-specific step matters at the end: test from a UK connection. A page that looks fine to you abroad can still be broken for UK visitors, so ask a UK reader to confirm, or check from a UK network yourself.

Which image hosts work in the UK instead of Imgur?

Image hosts that can replace Imgur for UK audiences include PictureToLink (our product), ImgBB, Postimages and Flickr. None of them mention a UK restriction on the official pages we read. Whichever you choose should work for UK visitors, give you a direct link that other sites can display, and make clear how long images are kept.

Check for yourself if your audience depends on it.

Disclosure: PictureToLink is our product.

  • PictureToLink: quick links with no account, in direct, share page, HTML, BBCode and Markdown formats, with metadata (including GPS) removed. Our limits: 25 MB per image, no albums and no accounts, and images are removed after 12 months without views. Keep your own copies.
  • ImgBB: no account needed, a 32 MB limit and optional auto-delete from 5 minutes to 6 months.
  • Postimages: built for forums and says images are not removed for inactivity, but it keeps EXIF data on anonymous uploads.
  • Flickr: a photo community rather than a quick-link host, and it needs an account.

For limits, retention and privacy side by side, see our comparison of free image hosting sites.

If you re-upload old phone photos, check them for GPS data first, because some hosts keep it. Our EXIF remover deletes it in your browser before you upload anywhere.

What if Imgur comes back?

It may, if MediaLab decides to resume UK operations. Even so, re-hosting is worth doing for images that matter to your readers. A single host disappearing in one country took images offline for a whole audience at once. Keeping your originals, and knowing which pages use which host, makes the next change much easier.

Next step

If you are fixing a forum post or a README today, upload the image and copy the BBCode or Markdown version straight into your edit. If you have dozens of images to move, you can upload up to 20 at once and use "Copy all" to get every link in one go.
