How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Choose JPG (or PNG) and a quality. The default, 92%, keeps photos looking the same.
- Drop your HEIC photos on the box above or tap “Choose HEIC photos”. You can add up to 30 at a time.
- Download each JPG, or use “Download all as ZIP” for a batch. Your original HEIC files are not changed.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos when the camera is set to “High Efficiency”, which has been the default since iOS 11. It stores the picture with HEVC compression inside a HEIF container, so photos take up less space than JPGs of the same quality. The catch is compatibility: many websites, upload forms, Windows PCs and Android apps still can’t open it. Our guide what is HEIC? explains the format in more detail.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
- Upload forms and websites often accept only JPG or PNG, and reject HEIC outright.
- Web browsers: Safari on recent Apple devices can show HEIC, but Chrome, Edge and Firefox can’t.
- Windows needs extra extensions from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC; JPG opens everywhere.
- Sharing: a JPG can be emailed, posted or turned into a link without anyone needing special software.
JPG or PNG?
Choose JPG for photos: it is accepted everywhere and keeps files a sensible size. Choose PNG only when a form demands it or you plan to edit the image further, because a PNG of a phone photo is often several times larger than the JPG. Need the file smaller after converting? Use the image compressor or reduce it to a size in KB.
Privacy: what happens to your photos
Conversion happens entirely in your browser using libheif, an open-source HEIF decoder licensed under the LGPL-3.0, compiled to WebAssembly and packaged by heic-to. Your photos are not uploaded, stored or seen by us. The converted file contains only the image, so the GPS location, camera model and date the original carried are left behind — useful when you are about to share it. To see what a photo reveals first, use remove EXIF data.
Stop your iPhone saving HEIC
If you regularly need JPGs, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG (and videos as H.264). Under Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC, “Automatic” converts photos to a compatible format when you copy them to a computer. Step-by-step help is in how to change iPhone photos to JPG.
Limits
Converting very large photos uses a lot of memory, so on older phones convert a few at a time. Some HEIF variants — such as image sequences or files from non-Apple cameras with unusual settings — may not decode; you’ll see a message if that happens. Live Photos convert to their still image.
