How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Keep “JPG” selected, or pick PNG if the image has a transparent background you want to keep. The default quality, 92%, suits photos.
  2. Drop your .webp files on the box above or tap “Choose WebP images”. You can add up to 30 at a time.
  3. Download each JPG, or use “Download all as ZIP” for a batch. The WebP files on your device stay as they were.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format from Google. The WebP FAQ calls it “a method of lossy and lossless compression” for photos, translucent images and graphics on the web. According to MDN, its lossy mode is based on the VP8 video codec, and the format can also hold transparency and animation. A single image can be up to 16,383 × 16,383 pixels.

You usually meet WebP by accident. A site sends the format to browsers that accept it, you save the picture, and the file ends in .webp instead of the .jpg you expected. What is WebP? covers the format in more depth.

Why your browser shows WebP when other software refuses it

Browsers stopped being the obstacle some time ago. Can I use lists full support from Chrome 32, Edge 18, Firefox 65, Safari 16 and Safari on iPhone 14, with partial support in desktop Safari 14 to 15.6, and about 97% of browser use worldwide. MDN adds that on a Mac, Safari needs macOS Big Sur or later for WebP.

The trouble is everything else: older photo editors, some desktop apps and upload forms that only accept JPG or PNG. Changing the file ending doesn’t help. Microsoft’s guide to file name extensions says a new extension “won’t convert the file to another format”, so a renamed WebP is still a WebP inside.

Transparent WebP images turn white in JPG

MDN is plain about this: “JPEG does not support an alpha channel.” So before saving a JPG, this tool paints a white background behind the image. A logo cut out on transparency ends up on a white rectangle, and its soft edges blend into that white. On a white page you won’t see the difference. On a coloured or dark page you will. To keep the transparency, choose PNG under “Convert to”.

Quality and file size

JPG is lossy, and a lossy WebP has already thrown some detail away, so the conversion can’t bring that back. Start from the best copy you have and keep the quality at High (92%) unless you need a smaller file. Drop to Balanced or Smaller file only when size matters more than fine detail.

Expect the JPG to be larger than the WebP in many cases, since smaller files are the reason sites use WebP in the first place. Each result shows both sizes, and WebP vs JPG has our measurements. For a sense of how much data a picture holds before compression, try the image size calculator. If the JPG is over a limit, use the image compressor or reduce it to a size in KB.

JPG or PNG for a WebP image?

  • Photos: JPG. It is accepted almost everywhere and stays a sensible size.
  • Screenshots, charts and anything with text: PNG. JPG leaves faint halos around sharp edges, and PNG keeps every decoded pixel.
  • Logos and stickers: PNG, because it keeps the transparent background.

Animated WebP files

WebP can store animation, but the JPG and PNG files made here hold one picture, so you get the first frame. If you want to keep the movement, leave the file as WebP or read animated WebP vs GIF for the options.

What happens to your images

The conversion uses your browser’s built-in WebP decoder, so there is nothing extra to download and nothing is sent to us. The new file holds only the picture: any location, camera or date details in the WebP are left behind. To check what a photo reveals first, use remove EXIF data. Once you have the JPG, you can turn it into a link to share it.

Questions and answers

Can I just rename a .webp file to .jpg?

No. Renaming changes the label and leaves WebP data inside, so strict apps and upload forms will still reject the file or call it damaged. The picture has to be decoded and saved again as a JPEG, which is what this page does.

Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?

WebP usually stores the same picture in fewer bytes, so the JPG can come out larger. Each result shows the old and new size. If the JPG is too big, choose a lower quality before adding the file, or run it through the image compressor afterwards.

What happens to a transparent background?

It turns white, because JPG can’t store transparency. Soft edges blend into the white as well. Choose PNG under “Convert to” if the background has to stay transparent.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the WebP and writes the JPG on your own device, and this page sends none of it to our servers. The results stay available until you close or reload the tab, so save what you need before then.

Can I convert an animated WebP?

Only as a still. JPG and PNG files from this tool hold a single picture, so you get the first frame of the animation.

What if the page says my browser can’t read WebP?

Your browser is too old to decode the format, and this converter relies on the browser to do that. Update it, or open the page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
