A standard 12-megapixel phone photo saved as HEIF or JPEG is about 2 to 2.5 MB. That figure comes from Apple: a 12 MP ProRAW photo is about 25 MB, and ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG. A 48 MP ProRAW photo is about 75 MB. Photos that have already been shared or saved from the web are often far smaller: our four sample JPEGs were between 0.39 and 2.28 MB, and after resizing to 1,920 pixels wide they dropped to 84–374 KB. So the honest answer depends on the format and the resolution. A typical phone photo is a few megabytes, a RAW file is tens of megabytes, and a photo prepared for the web is a few hundred kilobytes.

Key statistics

Each line links to its source or to the method at the end of this page. In this article 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB = 1,000 MB.

  1. About 25 MB: a 12 MP Apple ProRAW photo (Apple).
  2. About 75 MB: a 48 MP Apple ProRAW photo (same source).
  3. 10 to 12 times: how much larger ProRAW files are than HEIF or JPEG files (same source).
  4. About 2.1–2.5 MB: a 12 MP HEIF or JPEG iPhone photo, worked out from the two Apple figures above (method).
  5. About 400–480: standard 12 MP photos per gigabyte. The same gigabyte holds about 40 photos in 12 MP ProRAW and 13 in 48 MP ProRAW.
  6. 25 MB: the Gmail attachment limit for personal accounts (Google). After encoding, that leaves room for roughly 7 to 9 standard 12 MP photos per email.
  7. 20 MB: the largest file Discord accepts without Nitro; Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro up to 1 GB (Discord). A 48 MP ProRAW photo is too big for both of the first two.
  8. 1 MB: above this size, still images uploaded to Imgur without an account are lossily compressed (5 MB for account holders) (Imgur). A standard phone photo is over that line.
  9. 62% to 95% smaller: our four sample photos after resizing to 1,920 px at our default quality (method).
  10. 90% to 99% smaller: the same photos at 800 px wide, which left them between 22 and 97 KB.
  11. 3 of 4: sample photos that came out smaller as WebP than as JPEG at 1,920 px. The fourth, a portrait with a soft background, was 51% larger as WebP.
  12. 5 MB: the per-image limit on TinyPNG's free web plan (Tinify), low enough to turn away a 12 MP ProRAW photo but not a standard one.

How big is a phone photo?

Apple publishes official sizes for its RAW format. On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, ProRAW can be captured at 12 MP or 48 MP, and Apple's ProRAW support article gives the sizes:

PhotoApproximate sizeSource
Apple ProRAW, 48 MP75 MBApple
Apple ProRAW, 12 MP25 MBApple
HEIF or JPEG, 12 MP2.1–2.5 MBWorked out from Apple's 10–12× ratio

Apple does not publish a size for standard HEIF photos at 24 MP, which the same article says standard HEIF supports. Expect those to be larger than the 12 MP estimate. This page does not quote Android figures because we have not verified an official one yet.

Why the range is wide: the file size depends on pixel count, the format, and how much detail the scene holds. In our tests the night photo, a 5,000-pixel JPEG of 2.28 MB, shrank the most, while a photo full of fine flower detail kept the most of its size. Our guide to reducing image file size explains each factor.

Looking for print sizes such as 4 × 6 or 5 × 7 inches? That is a different meaning of "photo size". This page is about file size, the space a photo takes on a disk or in an upload.

How many photos fit in 1 GB?

Divide 1,000 MB by the size of one photo. Using the sizes above:

Photo typeSize of one photoPhotos per GB
Apple ProRAW, 48 MPabout 75 MBabout 13
Apple ProRAW, 12 MPabout 25 MB40
HEIF or JPEG, 12 MPabout 2.1–2.5 MBabout 400–480
Our sample photos, resized to 1,920 px84–374 KBabout 2,670–11,880
Our sample photos, resized to 800 px22–97 KBabout 10,350–45,100

Storage you see on a phone or in the cloud is shared with apps, videos and backups, so treat these as upper limits rather than promises.

Will a photo fit the upload limit?

Most upload failures come from a limit, not from the photo being "too big" in any absolute sense. These are the limits on the official pages as of 28 October 2026:

ServiceLimit per fileA 12 MP HEIF/JPEG (≈2.5 MB)A 48 MP ProRAW (≈75 MB)
Gmail, personal account25 MB per emailFits; about 7–9 per emailDoes not fit
Discord without Nitro20 MBFitsDoes not fit
Discord Nitro Basic50 MBFitsDoes not fit
Imgur50 MB (lossy compression above 1 MB without an account)Fits, but recompressedDoes not fit

Postimages, free32 MB and 10,000 × 10,000 px (FAQ)FitsDoes not fit
TinyPNG, free web plan5 MBFitsDoes not fit
PictureToLink (our product)25 MBFitsDoes not fit

Email limits count the message after encoding. Attachments are converted to text with Base64, which makes them about a third bigger (RFC 2045), so a 25 MB limit holds roughly 18.7 MB of original files. Our article on email attachment size limits covers Outlook and Yahoo too, and the Discord file size limit guide covers servers with boosts.

How much can a photo shrink?

We ran four sample photos through our own upload pipeline (sharp/libvips, metadata removed, longest side capped at 1,920 px). Sizes are measured, not estimated:

Sample photoOriginal1,920 px JPEG, default quality1,920 px WebP800 px JPEG
Night scene, 5,000 px wide2.28 MB110 KB (95% smaller)79 KB22 KB (99% smaller)
Portrait, soft background, 3,024 × 2,0161.65 MB374 KB (77% smaller)566 KB28 KB (98% smaller)
Hydrangeas, fine detail, 3,000 × 2,000985 KB370 KB (62% smaller)301 KB97 KB (90% smaller)
Landscape, 4,032 px wide390 KB84 KB (78% smaller)55 KB22 KB (94% smaller)

Two patterns stand out. Resizing does most of the work: every photo lost at least 62% just by going down to 1,920 px. And WebP is not always smaller. It won on three photos but lost clearly on the portrait, so it is worth checking the result instead of assuming.

To get a photo under a limit yourself, the free image compressor works in your browser, and the reduce image size in KB tool hits an exact target such as 100 KB. On an iPhone, our guide to reducing photo size on iPhone shows the camera settings that make every new photo smaller.

Method

  • Apple figures are quoted from Apple's About Apple ProRAW article (published 19 April 2024, checked 28 October 2026).
  • The 2.1–2.5 MB estimate divides Apple's 25 MB (12 MP ProRAW) by Apple's 10–12× ratio: 25 ÷ 12 ≈ 2.1 MB and 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5 MB. It is our arithmetic, not a figure Apple states.
  • Photos per GB divides 1,000 MB by the size of one photo and rounds down.
  • Photos per Gmail email takes the 25 MB limit, removes the Base64 overhead (25 ÷ 4 × 3 ≈ 18.7 MB) and divides by 2.1–2.5 MB.
  • Upload limits were read on each service's own page on 28 October 2026. Limits change; follow the links for the current figure.
  • Our measurements come from four sample photos that were already saved as JPEG, not camera originals, run through the PictureToLink pipeline (sharp/libvips) on 12 October 2026 at the default "balanced" quality setting, with the output resized so the longest side is at most 1,920 px or 800 px. Exact byte counts: night 2,282,830 → 109,760; portrait 1,645,283 → 374,012; hydrangeas 984,536 → 369,873; landscape 389,561 → 84,115.
